The fish design gained popularity in the 1970s and originates its name from its fish like swallow tail.  It is shorter, wider and flatter than a shortboard and works very well in small mushy surf.  There is not much curve in the rocker of a fish, which makes it paddle very well and carry speed through flat sections of the wave.  They are most often ridden as a twin fin, split keel, or quad.
